Why should a catcher throw to second before “play ball”. It only makes him look rediculous, when he screwed up the throw. And it only holds up the game pace, in my opinion.

I like his enthusiasm, that’s important at the little league level, it’s more important to have fun than anything else. But, never directly address the team about things like this. If you have something to say, tell the coaches in the plate meeting.

“Balls in, coming down” is a standard last action in a warm-up before the game or inning start. All practice balls come in and then the catcher makes the throw to 2nd.The umpire has nothing to do with this. He is just trying to be in things.

I feel bad cuz there’s so many things wrong with these videos from an umpiring perspective, but the guy’s so enthusiastic about it, I feel bad for criticizing him. haha

I have been playing for years and I noticed alot of things he did wrong. The catcher usually says coming down or down in 2. The good ones sweep the plate with their butt facing centerfield. I have never had an umpire talk to my team about the rules that is the coaches responsibility. Most have the hats in front too.

How about the unbuttoned shirt, the preaching to the dugouts about his expectations…etc. This is more of a grocery list on how not to umpire, rather than a how to. I must admit, though, the guy does have spirit.

If youre serious about calling games, ask a veteran umpire to mentor you. Dont rely on what you see in these clips.

Never let the catcher turn around and ask you where the pitch was. Why is he at the dugout giving them the low down?

First of all, you don’t go up to the dugout and point your finger telling them not to give a dirty look. You shouldn’t be saying anything to them. That’s what the plate conference is for. And that is the two umpires (suggesting you’re working the 2 man system) and the head coaches ONLY! The coaches will go back and relay anything discussed at the plate in regards to arguing calls, throwing euipment, profanity, live and dead ball territories, etc.

you don’t wait for the catcher to say coming down. You make sure the pitcher tosses eight warm up pitches, on the 7th as your standing on the line to the left of home plate you announce, ” one more pitch!”, the catcher will let his teammates know the ball is “coming down”, then after he throws to 2nd, you step in front (not behind) the plate, sweep it, turn towards the field placing your mask on, making sure the pitcher is on the mound w/ the ball, catcher is behind the plate, coaches in place

…defensive players in position, then you step behind the catcher, lift your right hand up and put the ball in play.
That is the correct way to start a game. End of story. And if that’s the “Marquee” field, HOLY SHIT! I couldn’t imagine umpiring on an “all dirt” field with no mound.
Bro, turn your hat around and button your shirt up, stop holding your mask “any ‘ol way”, there is actually a correct way to hold it believe it or not and it isn’t in your right hand or under your arm.
